When most high-end computer programs (such as operating systems and graphic-based software) are installed, a serial key will be used. This number will match a number inside a file on the installation disk, which will confirm that the software is not a counterfeit and that it has not been installed previously. This file containing the serial key number will be installed onto the computer, but typically it will be hard to access (this is because the file key can be installed anywhere and will change from program to program). If, for whatever reason, you need to know the serial key’s number again, it is possible to recover the file that contains it.

Guide: How to Recover a File Key with Product Key Explorer?
Step 1:
Download the Product Key Explorer software. Do this by clicking “Download” in the link provided in “Resources,” below. Product Key Explorer is a program that specializes in recovering the file that contains a program’s serial key.
Step 2:
Install the program. Do this by opening the downloaded icon (which can be found either on the desktop or in a “Downloads” window). An installation wizard will launch. Follow the wizard’s steps to complete the setup.
Step 3:
Open the program. Perform a full-system scan for the information. To do this, leave all the scanning options checked and click “Scan.” The program will now scan the computer for all available serial key files.
Step 4:
Search through the list of serial key files once the scan has completed. Each item in the list will have the file name, what program it is used for and the serial key. Select the particular file for which you want the serial number. You will now be able to see and view all the information about the file as well as the key number.

Summary:
Therefore, in order to install or reinstall Microsoft Office, Windows, or other commercial software, you must have access to a product serial key (CD Key) for that product. Product Key Explorer retrieves serial keys from network computers and allows to protect your company from having pirated software on your network.
