Back in the 90′s McAfee was King, but over time they started to add in many additions to their program to enhance it.  Firewall, SPAM protection, Spyware protection, Anti-Rootkit, and Phishing protection have been added to most major anti-virus programs.  Along with increased protection, the two unfortunate side effects have been a much slower computer and decreased ability to fight vriuses as they spread their resources too thin trying to be all things to all people.  In the end, most programs that try to do everything tend to do none well.  Most good technicians stopped recommending the big anti-virus programs about 6 years ago.
